James David Vance (born March 2, 1984) is an American politician, author, and venture capitalist who has served as the junior United States senator from Ohio since 2023.

Vance is a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the United States Senate in the 2022 election, defeating Democratic nominee Tim Ryan. Vance is the first Republican to represent Ohio in the Senate since George Voinovich retired in 2011.

Prior to entering politics, Vance was a venture capitalist and the author of the bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis (2016). He is a graduate of Yale Law School and Ohio State University.
